Planning to study, work or settle overseas? Before choosing a destination, check which changes are already in effect and which are scheduled for later. This October roundup covers selected official updates and current programme priorities relevant to applicants in Oman.
New Zealand: Visitor Visa Application Changes Are Now in Effect
Immigration New Zealand has moved most visitor visa applications to its enhanced Immigration Online system.
From 24 September 2026, applicants could no longer start applications for the affected visitor visa types in the old system. From 8 October 2026, the specified old application forms closed, and remaining unsubmitted drafts were deleted.
If your application was already submitted, you do not need to submit it again because of this transition. Access remains available for providing documents and responding to requests until a decision is communicated.
What this means for you: If you started an application but never submitted it, check whether you need to begin again in the enhanced system. The change applies to specified visa types, so confirm the instructions for your particular category.

New Zealand: A New Graduate Work Visa Opens in November
A Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is scheduled to open on 16 November 2026. It is not yet open as of this article’s update date.
The visa will offer eligible graduates six months of open work rights. Key requirements include an eligible NZQCF Level 5–7 qualification studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks, which does not qualify the applicant for a Post-Study Work Visa.
Applicants must also meet financial and other requirements. Applications must be made within three months of the student visa expiring.
This route cannot be extended, and holders cannot use it to support a partner’s work visa or a Dependent Child Student Visa.
What this means for you: Check the exact qualification and family conditions before choosing a course based on post-study opportunities.

United Kingdom: New Erasmus+ Immigration Guidance
The UK Home Office published guidance for Erasmus+ participants on 8 October 2026.
The appropriate immigration permission depends on the activity, duration, age and participant’s role. Certain short visits may be suitable for the Standard Visitor route, while work experience or placements may require a Government Authorised Exchange visa and sponsorship.
Longer study may require a Student or Child Student visa, with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from a licensed education provider.
What this means for you: An Erasmus+ opportunity does not give every participant the same immigration permission. Confirm the correct route with the host institution or programme organiser before applying.

Canada: Check Your Eligibility Against Current Express Entry Categories
Canada’s current Express Entry categories include French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education and transport. There are also specific categories for physicians, senior managers and researchers with Canadian work experience, and skilled military recruits.
Applicants must first qualify for an Express Entry programme and meet the requirements of the relevant invitation round. Eligible candidates are ranked by their Comprehensive Ranking System score.
What this means for you: Your job title alone is not enough to establish category eligibility. Review your occupation code, duties, qualifying experience and language results against the current requirements. Category eligibility does not guarantee an invitation.

Australia: The 2026–27 Migration Programme Remains Relevant to Planning
Australia has set its 2026–27 Permanent Migration Programme at 185,000 places, with an approximate 70:30 split between skilled and family migration.
This is a programme planning level, rather than an individual eligibility or approval guarantee.
What this means for you: Start with the requirements of your intended visa route and any applicable nomination process, rather than relying on the overall number of places.
